Tokyo Sky Tree's giant shadow - via A Japan Photo per Day -

View from Tokyo Sky Tree, Sumida

Tokyo Sky Tree, opened to the public in May last year, with its 634 meters is the tallest tower and the second tallest construction in the world. But why the builders chose to make it 634 meters tall? They wanted a height to be easily remembered and, by using old Japanese numbering, “634″ can be read as mu-sa-shi, the name of the old Musashi Province - which included the tower’s location, the Sumida ward from Tokyo.

While visiting Tokyo Sky Tree, one of the views I enjoyed a lot was from the first observation deck (located at the height of 350 meters) towards the Sumida River. The tower’s giant shadow cast over the city is quite impressive and you can easily identify the first observatory, the second observatory (located at 450 meters) and the 184 meters antenna.

The French Castle from Tokyo - via A Japan Photo per Day -

Chateau Restaurant Joel Robuchon, Yebisu Garden Place, Tokyo

As a child, you probably read “The Adventures of Tintin", the series of comics created by the Belgian artist Hergé. Otherwise, you may have watched the recent Tintin movie…

Translated in over 50 languages, the series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century. At some point in the story it is described a castle, Le château de Moulinsart, which was inspired by a real-life castle from France, Château de Cheverny from the Loire Valley. The fictive castle from Tintin was also built, not in France but… in Tokyo. Located in Ebisu, this architectural jewel houses one of the best French restaurants, “Chateau Restaurant Joel Robuchon” a Michelin 3-Stars establishment.

Tokyo, Ultra-short Skyscraper history - via A Japan Photo per Day -

View from World Trade Center Building, Minato, Tokyo

Compared to other large cities, the vertical development of Tokyo begun relatively recently: while in New York the first building over 200 meters was built in 1909 (the Metropolitan Life Tower), up until the beginning of 1960’s in Tokyo there was a law in effect (the Building Standard Law) that was forbidding the development of commercial buildings taller than 31 meters and residential building over… 20 meters.

After Tokyo Tower was inaugurated in 1958, it became clear that the citizens of Tokyo wanted taller buildings, so in 1963 the law was abolished and, only one year later, the New Otani Hotel was inaugurated: it was 72 meters tall and the tallest building in Japan, but it wasn’t a skyscraper… The first skyscraper in Tokyo (and in Japan) appeared in 1968, with the completion of the 156 meters-tall Kasumigaseki Building. Today, the tallest skyscraper in Tokyo is the Tokyo Midtown which, with a height of 248 meters, was inaugurated in 2007.

Here they are, both these landmark buildings, photographed from the World Trade Center Building, a building that is in itself part of Tokyo’s skyscraper history because it is the skyscraper that, with a height of 162 meters, surpassed the Kasumigaseki Building in 1970…
The Kasumigaseki Building is the wide building on the upper-right part of the photo, while the Tokyo Midtown is the blue-brown skyscraper on the upper left.

Tokyo Gundam 2012 - via A Japan Photo per Day -

RX-78-2 Gundam, Diver City, Odaiba, Tokyo

Remember the spectacular Gundam robot first built 3 years ago in Odaiba and then dismantled? After a brief presence in Shizuoka in 2010, the giant robot returned last winter in Odaiba, where it will remain for good, much to the joy of the many Gundam fans…

And the Gundam is not just for decor - today begins the 29th National Urban Greenery Fair Tokyo, a fair taking place in six of the most beautiful parks from Tokyo (Ueno Park, Inokashira Park, Hibiya Park, Hamarikyu Gardens, Sea Forest and Showa Memorial Park) and in several other venues, where buildings will be covered in greenery. The Gundam from Odaiba will also be a part of this fair - a “Gundam flower topiary” is to be built in front of the Diver City Plaza shopping mall - a flower covered Gundam bust

Tokyo Opera City and a travel tip - via A Japan Photo per Day -

Tokyo Opera City, Shinjuku, Tokyo

Since the skyscrapers from Nishi-Shinjuku are one of my favorite photography themes, there are just a few not yet presented here… Today, I would like to show you the Tokyo Opera City skyscraper because, while planning my next trip, I just learned that an interesting contemporary art exhibition currently takes place here until September 2: “Beat Takeshi Kitano, Gosse de peintre". One of the most acclaimed actors from Japan, Takeshi Kitano is a complex artist, a film director, actor, screenwriter, poet, singer and painter… If you’re in Tokyo this summer and interested to visit, see more information here.

Returning to the Tokyo Opera City skyscraper, with its 234 meters, this is the third tallest building in Shinjuku and the seventh tallest building in Tokyo. Built in 1997, it has an elegant modernist architecture, as you can see from this picture taken from the Tokyo Metropolitan Building Observatory.
